General Purpose/Scope of Position

This position is a term of national/community service with AmeriCorps and TAMIU. AmeriCorps members will provide literacy tutoring to struggling elementary students around Laredo. Members must be US citizens, US nationals, or lawful permanent residents to qualify. (At this time DACA does not qualify.) Position is Sept 1- Dec 31, 2017.

Required Qualifications

- Some college
- Experience working or volunteering with young children or in a business/office setting. Education (24+ college level credit hours in a relevant field) can replace formal experience.
- Excellent English language oral and written communication skills as evidenced in application documents and interview.
- United States citizen, a United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien and at least 17 years of age.
- Willing and able to pass a tuberculosis screening (skin test or x-ray as determined by health care professional), and to provide results to partner schools.
- Consent to, and pass, confidential background checks as required by the program and partner schools.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree.
- Previous experience as a tutor with the TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership, or successful completion of tutoring in Cuellar Elementary LEC (TAMIU class EDEL 3362).
- Formal leadership experience.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Experience in one of the following areas: marketing, design, volunteer recruitment, parent partnership, quantitative research/data.
- Some knowledge of Spanish.

- Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
- Awareness of effective literacy intervention process.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Other Information

New position for AmeriCorps Literacy Partnership grant. Full time FALL ONLY AmeriCorps members commit to a 450+ hour term of service ending Dec 31st, 2017. Members will undergo additional background checks, a tuberculosis test, and must maintain the clearance to serve in partner schools.

Summary of Job Duties

Essential Duty

Provide 1:1 tutoring to elementary students struggling with reading delays. Design and implement lessons, maintain accurate records, foster positive student relationships using positive behavior support. Maintain the organization and workspace of tutoring centers. Serve as model tutor to others.

Essential Duty

Participate actively in ongoing training, meetings and planning events with partner school personnel. Collaborate frequently with program staff and other full-time tutors. Serve as peer leader to other tutors.

Essential Duty

Identify and serve in 2 or more additional service opportunities; option to participate in out of town training or conferences; foster and maintain collaborative relationship with all service partners. In the event of a declared disaster, members may be called upon to deploy temporarily to an affected area to participate in recovery/response.
